Making a contribution

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:00 am

There’s something about this campaign season which has felt a bit, lackluster. Maybe it’s COVID fatigue or political overload, I’m not sure why I’m feeling so “meh” about this City Council and Mayor race. Anyway, here are the summary sheets for the City Council candidates. Tony Daysog is running his same, low money campaign which, good for Tony Daysog for figuring out that if you run all the time and keep your name in the conversation it makes running a lot easier but most of his money is from himself which just goes back to the inherent problem of running for office in Alameda: only those who can afford to work for free can run and serve. Jim Oddie is leading the pack in fundraising. Hannah Groce is leading the pack in spending.

  1. Would you support a candidate for City Council or Mayor who refused to debate or appear at a candidate forum? Most people wouldn’t, just on the principle that the voters have the right to hear their ideas and see them in action. For instance, Gavin Newsom just challenged Gov. DeSantis to a debate, and agreed to debate his Republican opponent for governor, Brian Dahle.

But our own hometown politicians, Mia Bonta and Rob Bonta both have now refused debates with their opponents, citing “unavailability.” Rob Bonta, who has lost several high profile appeals cases, imposed more state travel bans, accepted huge donations from Native American casinos, never has tried a felony criminal case, and has never won state wide office, will not debate his Republican opponent, Nate Hochman, who challenged him to three debates. Mia Bonta, who has never run in a general election, but got roughed up by Janani Ramachandran in a debate in the special election, has also refused to debate her opponent, Mindy Pechenuk, despite the LWV offering to host the event. Pechenuk has dubbed Mia – Missing in Action (MIA).

    Can anyone say empty suits?

    • If its any consolation neither of the mayor candidates that are challenging the incumbent showed up last night to the “Glocal” candidates night either. The Mayor was there!

    • Mia got “roughed up by Janani Ramachandran”? I must’ve missed that, or it totally didn’t happen. Rob wins all of his elections by ridiculously huge margins.

Who’s the empty suit here – Mia with her decades of experience, or Janani Ramachandran, who was barely a year out of school and promptly threw her progressive image under the bus by aligning herself with the MAGA Trish Spencer to pick up a few unprincipled NIMBY votes?

  2. One comforting thought is that no matter how much money Bail spent, it didn’t mean she won the Mayor’s race. I am hopeful that Alamedans will look at candidate QUALITY first. (It astounds me that folks like Trish and Daysog keep getting on the council when they do NOTHING.) So sad that council is designed so that only the rich can AFFORD to run, with the result that the quality of candidates is always negatively affected.
