First of the forums

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:16 am

Last night the League of Women Voters had its first 2022 candidate forum featuring City Council candidates. I live tweeted as best I could the questions and answers but my internet and headphones were acting up so for some candidates I didn’t get a full snapshot of what they were saying:

You can scroll through that if you want an idea of what was asked and what was answered last night. I have to say the questions asked were a little clunky but I tried to summarize as best as I could.

Here are the general takeaways about each candidate:

  1. So the one guy you think is “persuasive” and has “pretty good messaging” is Oddie, the guy the Grand Jury found violated the City Charter which in turn resulted in almost $1 million in costs to the City?

Do you also believe Biden reduced inflation to “zero” and Kamala’s recent statement that the border is “secure?”

    • Next time, try tuning in to your local community forums rather than getting brainwashed by Fox News.

    • First, the ongoing inflation is a global phenomenon which one country can’t avoid on its own. Secondly, the extent to which the US can influence its own inflation is primarily by the Federal Reserve Bank which does not report to the president – and of which the Chairman a registered Republican originally appointed to this role by the orange grifter. 2. I was really impressed by Hannah Groce, who before the forum I knew very little about. I hope she updates her website soon to include where she stands on the issues, including the ones she had thoughtful answers for last night.
Paul seems like a nice guy, and he probably knows the ins and outs of HOA governance by heart, but the issues important to Alameda as a whole are way more diverse than what the Bay Farm constituency cares about…which seems to be keeping BF the way it is, “why NOT build everything at the Point”, “I pay HOA dues so that means I have more rights than the average Joe”, etc. (I know, “not ALL Bay Farmers”, but…the majority that seems to hold sway out there.) He strikes me as unprepared.
Tony, the abstainer on so many important votes, who elevates a press release as a top acheivement. My west end neighbor, who knows the Fernside will butter his bread for him. Sigh.
I concur that Tracy is a good candidate struggling to articulate on some of the issues. I remember her time on the school board, and think she did a good job there so she’d likely be fine on council.
Jim obviously knows the issues and can articulate them well, and having served before knows how things work, but I wonder if the grand jury incident of several years back is too much to overcome.

  3. I was half way listening at the end, but can anyone confirm that Tracy mentioned she wouldn’t be able to fully participate in council meetings because she also had to attend oakland council meetings for her job or something along those lines?

    • I think she was saying that Alameda City Council meetings were way too long and used Oakland and Hospital Board meetings as a comparison because she goes to a lot of meetings.

  4. Thanks for posting this, Lauren. One can find the video by searching for Alameda League of Women Voters and at their site clicking Events/Election Forums. It’s 1 hour and 23 minutes, but by changing the setting to 1.25 speed it’s only 1 hour and 7 minutes. I plan to listen at 1.5 speed, so only 59 minutes.

    • At that speed, I will vote for whoever does the best chipmunk impression.

      • Lol. Ultimately, I listened at 1.0. Perhaps it was the poor audio quality or the way YouTube works because podcasts at 1.5 are just fine.

  5. Wow! Great tip. Which channel do you watch where the Stock Market didn’t plunge 1200 points today? Or inflation wasn’t at 8.3% or 3 million illegal immigrants didn’t come across the Southern bordering the last 18 months flooding our nation with fentanyl?

  6. After watching the video of Alameda League of Women Voters candidate forum, I’ll not be voting for Paul B. Two reasons…

First, is ignorance. The essence of his answer to city budget priority question was, “It’s very complex and I’m madly studying to get up to speed.” At least he was honest about his ignorance. Even his later comment about fairness to landlords exhibits ignorance of how much the council agonized over that exact issue and came up with a fair answer.

Secondly, lack of trust based on the Community of Harbor Bay Isle letter to the city he signed as HOA Vice President. It was exactly 180 degrees wrong for the purely selfish interests of that HOA. Now he talks “Amazonation,” but that was true when he signed that letter. Worse, that letter was dishonest, flat misrepresenting many so-called “facts.”

  7. It would be nice if people posted positive comments about the candidate of their choice rather than focusing on bashing the opposition.
