Overlay

HCD has some great maps with overlays that are designed to help cities like our understand our demographics better so when it’s time to start planning those Housing Element and affirmatively furthering fair housing we know what metrics to use. Here’s the map for you to play around with but I also screen grabbed a few that I found interesting and notable.

Majority White and Asian tracts, there are no tracts in Alameda with a majority of Black or Latino families:

These next three are indicative of high resource areas where jurisdictions will need to show that they are furthering fair housing for all:

And an assorted rest:

SB 535 Disadvantaged Communities

  1. But will any of this get built? Labor unions contributed $1.7 M to support Newsom’s efforts to avoid recall and lobby for union construction jobs with local politicians like Vella and Bonta. The effect is to drive up the price of “affordable” housing. In addition, most objective economists see that inflation is not “transitory” but accelerating prices of consumer goods and housing with costs already priced in to spiral upwards.

Neither Bonta nor Vella can solve these problems without ditching their main financial support and stopping unneeded and harmful stimulus money from Washington. You’ll be writing about this for years longer even if we somehow manage to avoid 1970s inflation and 20% interest rates.

    • A lot of excellent contortionist logic here, well done. Union construction jobs have been around for decades, so why are prices suddenly going up now? We’re on our way out of a pandemic, which has had a lingering effect of massively disrupting our supply chains for months, possibly years. Our global economy runs like a high-speed muscle car – it’s designed to move very fast in a straight and predictable fashion, but any kinks, slowdowns, curves, etc, throws everything off. We saw how a stuck container boat somewhere in the Middle East threw off production of Tesla vehicles so just imagine a global pandemic that’s been going on for 1.5 years.

We might as well play NextDoor NIMBY Bingo here: We already have Labor Unions, Bonta, Vella, Newsom, Washington… Just shoehorn in minorities, police reforms, Article 26, rent control, and I just might win!
