Relax and contain

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:02 am

One of the many Twitter accounts I follow for all the latest COVID-19 updates is the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation which has been tracking hospital forecasting to see when and where hospital resources will be exhausted.

One of their latest offerings is a map of where and when they believe that social distancing can be relaxed based on the data provided.  They are caveating everything by saying that “containment strategies” need to be in place even as social distancing is relaxed.  Right now they have California at May 17.

There are some states, notably Hawaii and Alaska, with early May dates for relaxing and some states that took huge steps backward in their forecasting like Florida. Which decided to reopen their beaches for some inexplicable reason over the weekend.

But for more specific California forecasting, you can see it here.  But in order to relax social distancing we’ll still need tools like contact tracing.  Recently a group of academics have endorsed Google/Apple’s app.  Looks like they think it will be ready in May but that’s only for public health authorities.  It’s not clear if that means local public health agencies on the county level or on the state level.  But hopefully either Google or Apple (or both) will have their own app for users to download and opt-in if they so choose.

  1. The cure is worst the problem.

    • The cure is worst than the problem.

      • I’m going to respond to you the same as I respond to others who still don’t take this seriously. To date there have been 800,000 cases and around 45,000 deaths. That means an average fatality rate of over 5%. Do the math. Now let’s assume that people like you got your way and everything opened. If every single American got this flu then 15 MILLION Americans would die.

So pray tell me how the cure is worse than the problem? Oh- and if you’re over 50, have any sort of widely common health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or have had cancer then you stand a much much higher chance of being a part of that statistic since the overwhelmingly largest share of that statistic is of that age and health group.

        Got it?

  2. Not if you care about people staying alive. I mean every single person on every side of every political stance there is has been touched by people dying of cancer. If we could stay home for months and fix cancer we would. Well let’s put it simply for those who are still so hostile toward staying home. If you could save someone you love from cancer by agreeing to SIP would you or it is just in God’s plan. If you think it is part of a plan then by all means. Let’s collectively pick a place and all the freedom fools can go there and leave the rest of us to listen to science.

  3. “Freedom fools”…apparently you believe China’s Communism is God’s plan.

  4. Yeah! Stay home Jack or else we’ll call the snitch line, ban you from Twitter and Facebook, stop you from going to church, arrest you if you play with your kids at the park, and dump sand in your skatepark.

p.s. we’ve released a bunch of violent criminals from jails in case you still want to go out .

  5. This thing isn’t going away anytime soon. Especially now that as we speak yet again right wingers are turning this into another one of their idiotic conspiracy theories. Georgia governor Kemp seriously want to reopen his state on FRIDAY. yes- you read that right; Friday even though Georgia is rapidly increasing in cases to a point where they will catch up and surpass California. I fear a lot of the red states are going to see a huge surge in cases and that in turn will do nothing more than press a giant reset button on the pandemic.

As a side note… even here in Alameda I am not really comfortable with some of what I’m seeing. Too many people congregating around the beaches and parks, almost brushing elbows. I also see a surprisingly large quantity of elderly people on my runs wearing no masks. Regionally many parks have had to be closed again- because people seem incapable of following common sense. We as a country are unique in that while most of the rest of the world instilled strict lockdown practices which has helped diminish their cases even here in California the restrictions have been lax. We will probably not be out of the woods until every single American is vaccinated.

    • On daily walks and rides, I have seen the lack of distancing on the Shoreline path that you describe. I rode out in the street to avoid it. But every place else I’ve been people have been thoughtful and respectful of distancing.

As for masks, you can’t wear em if you aint got em.

      • There are a plethora of web sites that show you how to make your own out of ordinary T shirts. We have 3-4. Not that hard. Better than nothing…
