Mask making

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:06 am

I’ve been making masks all weekend in order to prepare for the advisory that we wear masks in public.  Fortunately, I had a pretty extensive stockpile of fabric, because I’m a hoarder, and ended up repuposing #1 daughter’s old curtains into masks for the family.

This is the DIY I used for my masks.

The only thing I didn’t have readily in stock was elastic.   I’ve seen DIY versions for tied masks, but I feel like that would be more time consuming to put on and would lead to excuses for short excursion out.

As you can guess all of the big hobby and craft stores are out of elastic but I did find one supplier on line, both the white 1/32 inch and white 1/16 inch are in stock as of right now. The shipping was pretty fast but they definitely don’t have a ton of options in stock left.

I think I might try another contoured version after I get through the fabric I’ve already cut for the version above.

All this is to say that we should probably be wearing masks in public, even fabric ones. Not to protect ourselves but rather to project others if we are asymptomatic but still contagious.

  1. Yeah. I was the test dummy for all the masks my wife made yesterday.

WH advisor Peter Navarro says China bought & hoarded 2.2 billion masks from around the world in one month (Jan-Feb). Plus goggles, gloves, respirators.

Navarro says China “tried to corner the world market in PPE when they knew the dangers & didn’t tell the rest of the world.”

    • Peter Navarro. Not a great name right now. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Does he, or you, have proof? Source?

      • Dj — Just because our own White House is lying to us all of the time does not mean that the Chinese did not buy up world stockpiles before they publicized t just how bad the epidemic was and would become in their own country. Our administration is not the only one in the world capable of deceit, manipulation, hoarding, and miss-appropriating resources….
