National Horror Story: don’t be patient 31

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:06 am

Have you seen the reporting from Reuters about how COVID-19 spread through South Korea?

Apparently one person alone spread the virus to more than 1000 people:

The virus was first confirmed in the country on Jan. 20 when a 35-year-old Chinese woman who flew from Wuhan, China to Incheon international airport, which serves Seoul, was isolated upon entry into the country. In the four weeks following the incident, South Korea managed to avoid a major outbreak with only 30 people contracting the virus, despite many interactions between those later confirmed as being sick and hundreds more people being identified as contacts of the sick patients.

This changed with the emergence of “Patient 31.”

It’s not clear where Patient 31 became infected with the virus, but in the days before her diagnosis, she travelled to crowded spots in Daegu, as well as in the capital Seoul. On February 6 she was in a minor traffic accident in Daegu, and checked herself into an Oriental medicine hospital. While at that hospital, she attended services at the Daegu branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, on February 9 and again on February 16.

In between those visits, on February 15, doctors at the hospital said they first suggested she be tested for the coronavirus, as she had a high fever. Instead, the woman went to a buffet lunch with a friend at a hotel. In an interview with local newspaper JoongAng Ilbo, the woman denied that doctors had advised her to be tested. As her symptoms worsened, however, doctors say they once again advised her to be tested. On February 17, she finally went to another hospital for the test. The next day, health authorities announced she was the country’s 31st confirmed case. In only a matter of days, those numbers had soared as hundreds of people at the Shincheonji Church and surrounding areas tested positive.

The problem is while some of us are practicing social distancing to help avoid contact with a significant number of people there is evidence everywhere that a lot of people are proceeding with life as though nothing is different.  I saw photos of people in a club in Nashville over the weekend cheek to cheek and another of Las Vegas.   Right now we’re not testing at the levels of other countries and we’re being rather lassiez faire about being serious about stopping the spread, letting people recover and really allowing things to get back to normal.

Don’t be patient 31 people.

  3. If China was serious about fighting coronaviruses, it would have prohibited selling / dealing in BATS after the last SARS outbreak. Bats have long been known carriers of many coronaviruses.

  4. One Chinese national infected 1000 people in South Korea….

Ten thousand Chinese nationals flew into the USA every day from the October 2019 Wuflu discovery date until January, when President Trump imposed a travel ban. He was immediately called xenophobic by his political political opponents and China. However, almost all nations of the world have followed his lead and closed their borders, including Canada and Germany today.

Let’s face it. People are not responsible. That is why Alameda County and other Bay Area counties imposed a shutdown order today through April. (Oh yeah-except for the homeless who apparently can wander anywhere to spread infection, break into cars and panhandle).

Watching old geezer “at risk” candidates Biden and Bernie lie to each other last night separated by more than six feet, and without a studio audience was particularly underwhelming-almost like an episode of Black Mirror, as most of the programs they proposed will never happen anyway and have little relevance in our Covid 19 world.

    Thanks China!

    • yeah they were just like watching our 73 year old bald president sit in a chair in the oval office and barely be able to read a teleprompter. listening to trump barely be able to read really gives me confidence . he is the same idiot that in January of this year while in Davos was quoted telling reporters that we had control of covid-19 not to worry. we all know he isn’t very bright , but I think he is starting to show signs of dementia. or was he always this way,???
