National Horror Story: look to your duty

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:02 am

  1. Nixon was nailed for the cover-up, not the initial crime. What we have here is a ham-handed and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to extort political favors from a desperate ally. Heinous, to be sure, and worth investigating in light of possible impeachment. But is a single incident sufficient to warrant the ultimate constitutional remedy? I wish there were evidence of a pattern of such behaviors on which to base the case for impeachment. I sure there are other violations but they haven’t been identified or investigated. I’m afraid we’ll be letting the GOP senators off too easily with this rather thin gruel.

    • You are aware that there was a cover-up here as well? When the whistleblower filed the complaint, the Office of the Inspector General quickly concluded that it was both credible and “a matter of urgent concern.” Consequently, the OIG had a legal duty to report it to Congress. But when the OIG filed what should have been a pro-forma notification of the complaint with the Director of National Intelligence, something happened. Instead of facilitating the passing of the complaint to the congressional intelligence committees as the law requires, the administration began a frantic effort to bottle it up, permanently.

      • Well, I hope that’s clearly spelled out in the articles of impeachment so there’s more there there. I don’t want this to fall flat on its face.

  2. I am a Democrat who has never voted for a republican, but this stinks. Ironically, voter polls show support for impeachment has actually diminished during the course of the “impeachment inquiry.” It should have been the opposite. The lack of due process, hiding of the whistleblower, bumbling witnesses, selective memories (never heard of Burisma), and double and triple hearsay testimony was and is embarrassing. Do you follow the market? It hasn’t been moved a tic by the impeachment. Why? Because financial experts (who need to rely on certainty) believe the Democrat efforts will result in a partisan (not bipartisan) impeachment, a trial in the Senate, a finding of innocence, and the re-election of Donald Trump by a nation repulsed by these tactics, the obvious corruption of Joe Biden and his son, and a weak Democratic challenger running on unpassable and unaffordable socialist policies. Meanwhile, reports already circulate about FBI attorneys changing documents (a felony) on FISA (Russia, Russia, Russia) warrants, and intelligence officials will be prosecuted for violating the Constitution in their “resistance” zeal to get Trump after the release of the Inspector General’s report and US attorney John Durham’s investigation is concluded. Pelosi and Schiff have made a s#$t sandwich and served it up for America to eat.

    • Your “voter polls show support for impeachment has actually diminished during the course” comment was actually the headline on Fox News this morning. It was at 50% support and now 45% – both statistically within the margin of error. What you’re neglecting to mention is that most Americans (51%) support the impeachment process regardless of outcome. 45% support Trump being impeached and removed. 45% is exactly the same percentage that supported Nixon’s removal just a week before he resigned.

Even for most of the Watergate hearings, support for Nixon’s removal was only 20%. The current Ukraine hearings, it’s 45%. That’s pretty damning.
