Smart move

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:05 am

And the full statement:

For immediate release —

Today I notified Alameda City Manager Eric Levitt that I am withdrawing my request that the City reimburse legal fees I had incurred responding to allegations made by the former city manager. I do so in the spirit of allowing me and the City to fully focus on the teamwork necessary to addressing the tough issues of school safety/security, housing affordability, homelessness and vital services for all Island families.

I want to thank the community who have so vocally supported the City and my vision over the last several years. Be assured that I will continue to champion issues of concern to Alamedans in our collective fight to ensure that core needs, values and services are protected amidst unrelenting attack by the federal government, climate change, and the effects of gentrification.

Thank you!

Councilmember Jim Oddie

Putting aside the whole fact that the withdrawal is good for the City as a whole, it’s a smart move politically if Jim Oddie’s intent is to run for City Council next year.  Re-litigating the fees every single time anyone thinks about it while he is trying to run for a City Council seat will do him absolutely no favors at all.  But now he’s put as final of a pin in it as he absolutely can.

Naturally as long as there are dogged opponents willing to dredge up this topic it will never be fully closed.  But it definitely helps because no one can lodge the open litigation talking point at him.

  2. So does this mean Vella wants this very same issue dredged up for her next run?

  3. The fact he ever wanted to get reimbursed is an oppositional talking point and doesn’t go away. The fact he put undue pressure on the city manager according to the Grand Jury report will not go away.

Don’t forget, he was the “lucky loser” finishing out of the running in the last election, and would never even be on the council unless Mataresee hadn’t run for mayor. His “reelection” is DOA.

  4. Dear Mr Oddie:

Your illegal actions have already cost the city more than a million dollars and we lost a fine City Manager because of your actions to pressure the city manager for fire chief selection from within the fire department.

Grand Jury Report City Council response

The most severe of the four findings was Finding 19-4 that states “two Councilmembers did interfere with the City Manager’s ability to conduct an open and transparent recruitment for a new Fire Chief.” It was one of the first times members of the Council publicly acknowledged Vella and Oddie’s actions had violated of the Alameda City Charter.

Perhaps you might think of withdrawing from city council instead of withdrawing your request for legal fee reimbursement request.

I would wager a new council member would likely be able to help the council function a bit more smoothly than with you on the dias.
