Shades of not gray

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:01 am

As you can imagine the Planning Board was not in love with the design of the Residence Inn Hotel on Harbor Bay.  But in the end they moved forward with enough of the project that the developer could actually start building and not go through another million redesigns.

But had the president of the Board gotten her way she would have tanked the project right there and then.   First she had an issue with the setback from the Bay Trail.  Apparently she did not understand that the setback was from the building and not from the property line.  Also she didn’t understand that improvements on the set back portion not only was explicitly allowed by BCDC but also approved by the Planning Board (of which she was a member at that time).  There was a super fun bit where she was upset about the fire pit build on the set back along the Bay Trail side and the applicant responded that this was approved by BCDC.  The president of the Board shot back that the applicant needed the Planning Board approval as well and staff pointed out that the Planning Board already approved that in December.

When statements by a member of a policymaking body being with “well I think you should have done” you know this is going to be a long meeting.

Then there was a whole drawn out complaint about the landscaping plans and how they were “too tiny” to view.  And that this was super important to her about the types of plants that go in.  Honestly, until this member is off of the Planning Board it would just behoove anyone who is doing anything around landscaping to just ask her for her favorite plant types and put those in because it doesn’t even matter what the City’s planting standards are, if she doesn’t like them she’s going to make a big deal about the inappropriateness of the planting or how “scrawny” they are.

Given that this member was actively involved in all the community meetings and was still trying to throw up road blocks to the final approval it just really showed her hand and what she was trying to do.

Anyway the only thing that will come back is, I believe, the color scheme because no one really liked the 50 shades of gray going on with the palette.   Even though, at first, based on the comments from the Board members it was really looking like this project was going to face yet another delay.

And it more Planning Board news, here’s something you rarely see, someone not looking to get appointed back to the Planning Board:

  1. Hotels are notorious for attracting outsiders and those with nowhere else to sleep. Just a suggestion for her for the next stage of delaying.

    • …”notorious for attracting outsiders…”
Damn, thank you for clearing that up. I thought hotels were there to give travelers a place to sleep.

    • And your sarcasm unsurprisingly flew a mile over Jackie Boy’s head!

  2. Thank you, David, for your service to our community. Bless you for being of service to your children and those of the Otis community, an understandable priority in a SuperDad’s life.
