Speaking of “bad looks”

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:02 am

Okay this video is from all the way back in mid-April.  This is the Rec and Park Commission meeting (remember those are the meetings that I told you where all the drama that is not the City Council happens). This is an agenda item that, honestly, was a bit confusing if you aren’t really in the mix of things.  Basically it’s about how the usage for all the Rec and Park athletic facilities are allocated.

Sounds pretty complicated right?

Add to that staff (I believe) had suggested that two of the members of the Rec and Park Commission had to recuse themselves from the discussion because they sat on the boards of some groups that were requesting facility usage.  One of the Board Members made herself scarce, but the other one sat in the audience because she was told that she would be able to — as a private citizen — listen to the discussion.

In the middle of his comments, Commissioner Ruben Tilos, decided that he wasn’t having the commissioner as a private citizen thing and promptly threw a fit about faces she was supposedly pulling that was “distracting” to him and, essentially, asked that she be removed from the chambers.

At one point the chair of the Commission simply says that he didn’t create this mess so staff is going to have to make an adjudication on whether the recused commissioners can stay in the room.  The staff attempt to placate Ruben Tilos and he is not having it.  Rather than just let it go and allow the commissioner in the audience to just pull her faces or whatever she’s doing, he instead announces that unless she’s removed from the chambers he’s going to make the decision on this agenda item really difficult:

I could just be the one to mess everything up and if I abstain this goes no where.  Because you only have two votes.  This is how ridiculous it’s getting. So let’s just not have this discussion. Or let’s do it how it should be done.  This is embarrassing.  This is getting to the point of being embarrassing now.  It’s a bad look for our whole commission.

Let me point out, just to recap, that the person who stopped the staff presentation mid sentence to complain about someone in the audience being “distracting” and threatening to abstain unless he gets his way is talking about something being “embarrassing” and a “bad look.”

Oh, did I mention that Trish Spencer just nominated this guy for another term on the Rec and Park Commission?  That “history book” comment alone should have raised multiple eyebrows.

  1. listened to both video clips, Tilos sounds like a person who should not be on any board or commission.

  2. Might want to look at who appointed him for his first term.

    • That Mayor didn’t have four years of Rec and Park video to use to make a decision.

      • City webpage says Tilos was appointed 7/1/14 and term is up 6/30/18. Has he been reappointed already?

        • Yes, he was nominated on the 15th, will be up for a vote at the next City Council meeting.

  3. I’ve only seen a handful of Rec and Park Commission meetings, but the impression I get is the commission is a hot mess. Spencer really should try to make boards and commissions a functioning body rather than appointing her friends.

  4. as I recall some mayors in the past actually asked other council members for input before bringing the nomination forward to the full council. as the council has to vote on appointments it makes sense to have a little input from them before bringing a nomination forward.
