Homework help

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:09 am

In case anyone was wondering how diligently Trish Spencer studies her Council packet.

I enjoyed how serious she got when she said “This is 18-19. We’re in 2018.” I don’t know how you spend that many years in elected positions that require budgets to review. Add to that the number of years spent on PTAs also responsible for reviewing budgets (and creating budgets) and not knowing how fiscal years run. It absolutely mind boggling how we, locally, have someone so genuinely uninterested in learning anything that even basic stuff like that she doubles down on her wrongness as though everyone else is incorrect. I’ll note that she didn’t even apologize for or even “oopsie” her absolute certainty that the fiscal year was 2018-19.

  1. I too demand an apology from the mayor. I demand an apology from the consultant and staff for scaring us unnecessarily with phrases like “wall of debt”, “CalPERS bubble”, and “significant increase in unfunded liability”.

I don’t yet demand an apology from Councilmember Ashcraft. She did, however, rack up yet another digressions and redundancies foul during this agenda item. To be sure, it was non-flagrant and many referees (less insistent on interjecting their own notions of fairness, but instead striving for a more objective application of the rules) would have ignored the minor infraction and let play continue instead. But an infraction it was. Ashcraft began, “The other part of my question…”, and then – as if there were doubt – added to that prefatory clause, “it was two part….”

    • Whataboutism doesn’t suit you. You can do better defending Trish Spencer than that.

Or maybe you can’t. Because it’s inconceivable that someone who has sat on that many elected boards and purportedly provided oversight for that many budgets and calendars doesn’t understand how fiscal years, and I guess school years, actually work.

  2. I can’t even with these videos! But I hope you’re preparing a greatest hits reel for when it gets closer to election time. Maybe one for Tony and his ever-present laptop, too.

  3. So, our mayor doesn’t know what year this is?
