  1. There is no easy solution. The message given to teachers, school staff, parents and children that there is no one to protect you is a sobering one. What did we see in Broward County-a well-funded school district? Background checks are ineffective, as are mental health services, family counseling, “see-something/say something,” the FBI is asleep at the wheel, police officers can’t or won’t do their job to stop active shooters, and all our schools appear to be wide-open to intruders. Active shooter drills do not stop bullets nor do fences. Each time teachers give their lives shielding kids with their bodies and young lives are snuffed out. Banning one type of assault weapon won’t stop these incidents and there is no chance of the Second Amendment being repealed. Meanwhile nervous parents endure threats in the form of graffiti, instagram messages, and other social media threats, running to pull their children out of schools like we’ve seen this week at Lincoln and AHS. It should not be a shock that the lowest paid district in the Bay Area is also among the least secure and like Broward, pursues a policy to reduce discipline by deferring criminal prosecutions of errant students who sit in class with ankle bracelets. Since there is no money to “harden” the schools, and teachers can’t be armed due to one crazy teacher in Georgia, shall we just call school shootings an occupational hazard, and allow teachers to throw erasers and markers at shooters? Face it. The adults have failed.

  2. Reminds me of an episode from a couple of years ago…

Over the years we’ve hosted several exchange students from Spain, most recently in summer ’16. She was with me running a few errands and one stop was Walgreens. I was picking up a prescription that for some reason wasn’t covered by insurance and the tab was several hundred dollars. I remarked to her that she probably wasn’t used to that and she agreed.

I asked if she wanted to see something else sick about America and she was game. We walked over to Big 5 and the wall of guns made her eyes pop out. I asked the clerk (who recognized me as a regular shopper) if I could examine a shotgun. He said sure and I showed the young lady how to rack it. She was absolutely horrified, as she should have been.

We’ve stayed in touch & she occasionally emails asking WTF is going on in this country. It saddens me deeply that I am usually at a loss to explain, other than to say this great nation has gone crazy.

    • Why would anybody from Spain be “horrified” to see a shotgun racked. You ever been in Spain?

      Comment by Jack — March 1, 2018 @ 7:43 am

    • What are you doing to these Spanish exchange students you host, “dave”? You are not giving them instruction in American Institutions [a mandatory requirement for all graduates of UC Berkeley when Jack and I went there], that’s for sure. Would the student have been equally horrified if you had also explained the US and California Constitutions to her? I get that you can’t, because you don’t understand/haven’t read those constitutions yourself.
The nation you think you live in, isn’t the nation you actually live in.
You all need to listen to Armstrong and Getty once in a while.

“Not allow the sale of weapons whose sole purpose is to kill people”?? Well there’s a practical solution. Which weapons would those be, Doug? That would eliminate all police sidearms. Even six-shooters aren’t good for much else.

  3. Why would the statistics on gun use change when guns are in the hands of teachers? Yes, one day an armed teacher will stop something bad from happening. But not after the statistics first catch up with us, meaning many scores of incidents like this and worse. And after, as dave points out, we further lower our status in the world. Big prices to pay so that one party, primarily, can hold on to a certain single-issue block of voters.

    • Status in the world lowered? With billions clamoring to get here? Who gives a shit.

      • Don’t delay getting your CV to Kelly. He needs someone on the same wavelength to sub in for Jared. Pronto.

  4. Thanks for stating the obvious, Nowyouknow. What are you offering for a solution?

  5. Funny thing is, I bought my first handgun from one of my teachers. There had been nine rapes on campus, and no end in sight. Preventive measures were necessary.

  6. no automatic weapons, no 30 round clips, means people can’t be killed by automatic weapons or 30 round clips. easy peasy.
