Next week All Rise Alameda and the Encinal Student Justice Center are organizing a Period Products Drive.  This is exactly what it sounds like.  These two groups are collecting tampons and pads to donate to Midway Shelter, but the larger goal is bring attention to the inequity that is taxing a health product that is needed by more than 50% of the population for a vast majority of their lives.

AB 9 authored by Assembly member Cristina Garcia seeks to exempt menstrual products from being taxed.  And AB 10 seeks to make menstrual products freely available in public school restrooms.

Collection is happening all next week and can be dropped off at the following locations:

  •  The Fireside Lounge
  • Alameda Main Library
  • West End Library
  • Home of Truth
  • Encinal High School

For a quick brief on why this matter, check out this op-ed, highlights:

[F]or the more than 40 million women in this country living in poverty or on the brink of it – and for whom the cost of feminine hygiene products is yet another burden on an already stretched budget – periods are no joke. A year’s supply of tampons and pads costs upwards of $70 and is not covered by food stamps. For homeless women, the problem of lack of access to menstrual hygiene care is often compounded by “minimal access to safe sanitary spaces” like toilets and showers.

  1. free condoms might solve 50% of the 50% who need free menstruation devices.

  2. What do condoms have to do with menstruation, Jack?

    • Let’s say 100% of the total poor male Midway Shelter population can’t afford condoms and therefore go bareback. Their intercourse results in 50% male and 50% female offspring. Giving free condoms to the Midway Shelter males who can’t afford them results in 50% fewer Midway Shelter females who won’t be born so won’t need tampons.
