Never gonna give you up

File this one under: never give up!

On Tuesday night, even with a really well qualified field of candidates to go head to head against, Anne McKereghan was appointed to fill Solana Henneberry’s seat on the School Board.

Anne McKereghan came in just short in the 2016 election, a swing vote from the 2nd 2015 appointment, was a ranked choice away from appointment 1st 2015 appointment.

The best thing about this particular appointment is that it came with no real drama, at all. Possibly the easiest appointment process ever for the School Board.  And honestly, at this point who deserves this appointment more than Anne McKereghan who has supported this school district and these students for so many years.

The drama of the School Board night came under other agenda items and apparently during some remarks from the Superintendent.  The video is not yet up so I’m holding out until I can watch it but stay tuned.

  1. No one deserved it more than Anne. I have watched her over the years study the budget and rules like few people do and this is because she really cares. Her kids are grown but she knows a strong community needs strong schools.

What got me really excited was reading a couple of applications. Although in my opinion they aren’t ready yet there were a few stand outs that will become candidates later and have the potential to really be good board members. They need to be actively involved a little longer but it gave me hope for the future. They Alameda schools are so special, we have been so fortunate to have so many amazing teachers for our children.

    • During the prior two appointment processes there were a number of excellent candidates. None of them expect Anne choose to do the hard work of running for school board in the following election cycle. In 2016 two of three seats, the incumbents choose not to run providing an excellent opportunity to run.

In the next following I am guessing the two incumbents (Lym and McKereghan) will be running in 2018. So if these excellent candidates chose not run it maybe not because they are interested in serving on the School Board.

  3. California Department of Education issues a data tool for reviewing school performance. Good luck try figuring out how to interpret them.
