First day of the rest of the election season

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:08 am

Today is the first day that you can start the process of running for public office in Alameda.

From the City Clerk’s office press release:

A General Municipal Election will be held in the City of Alameda on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 for the following Elective Offices:

City Councilmember – 2 seats
City Auditor
City Treasurer

The Filing Period for candidates is July 18 through August 11, 2016. In the event an incumbent fails to file by August 11, the voters shall have until August 17 to nominate candidates other than the incumbent for that incumbent’s elective office. The City Clerk may begin to issue Nomination Papers no earlier than July 18, 2016.

Every elected officer of the City shall be a registered voter of the City at the time of filing Nomination Papers and for a period of thirty (30) days immediately preceding the date of filing. The Auditor is required to have a degree in accounting or business administration or be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant and have five years of accounting experience. The Treasurer shall have five years experience in administering investment programs and be licensed as a Chartered Financial Analyst or Certified Financial Planner.

Commencing July 18, 2016, nomination documents will be available during regular business hours (Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) in the City Clerk’s Office, Room 380, City Hall, Alameda, California.

Supposedly we’re going to get a real race for both the City Treasurer and City Auditor positions this year and — based on rumors circulating — it’s shaping up to be a crowded field for City Council.

Applications will be due by August 11 since all the incumbents are going to file.

    • Jennifer Roloff, Malia Vella, Marilyn Ashcraft and Tony Daysog. It has been rumored that Lena Tam may run as well.

  2. A City Press Release needn’t mention that there is also an election for three seats on the school board, but in thinking about what aspiring local politicians might do in coming days or weeks, it’s good to keep in mind that the school board race is happening too. Sometimes there are connections, alliances, history and overlap among and between candidates for City and AUSD offices.

    • The Alameda School Board race is administered by the Alameda County Registrar of Voters since 2006. After removal of a charter amendment, the school board was no longer part of Alameda city elections. Hence, the City press release would not mention the Alameda School Board openings.

    • Mike – confused as to why your name (when clicked) links to information on the City Auditor of Alameda (pulled from the City’s website) when you are not the City Auditor. Plus, you forgot to include the current City Auditor – Kevin Kearney – on your /election16 page.

      • The link you clicked on is my website not the City’s . The webpage is my research on the position and how it serves the City of Alameda taxpayers. The election16 webpage contains the information from the City Clerk at the end of each day. Kevin pulled papers today and is included in the most current version of the webpage.

      • BTW, do you know when ballot measures are assigned letters?

        Comment by MP — July 26, 2016 @ 10:02 pm

        • The placing of the candidates on the ballot is determined on the 82nd day prior to the election. I believe each county assigns the letters to qualified local measures during the same time frame.

  5. Roster of candidates for Alameda city races is final. Five running for City Council, two for Treasurer and two for Auditor. School Board filing deadline will in all likelihood extend to August 17 since two incumbents (Barbara Kahn and Phil Hu show no activity on the County ROV site).
