They’ve got passport smiles

Filed under: Alameda — Lauren Do @ 6:01 am

Sometimes good news is buried in the most unusual places.  This one was buried in the fee schedule agenda item, specifically:

The City Clerk’s office will begin a Passport Acceptance and Processing program in FY 2016-17.  A passport processing fee of $25.00 and a Passport photo fee of $15.00 were added.

Given the countless horror stories about the passport office at the South Shore Post Office, this is a welcome addition to the city of Alameda.  The only thing is, of course, that City Hall is closed on Fridays, but still way more convenient that the nightmare that is our only passport processing option on the island.

I’m pretty sure the one time I attempted to call the passport office to just find out if I could make an appointment it was a pointless exercise.

Now that the City Clerk’s office will be handling passports you can expect a baseline level of courtesy and competency.

  1. And the peasants rejoiced! Post Office processing of passports is like something out of Kafka, and it’s not just an Alameda thing; friends in other Bay Area cities say it’s just as bad.

  2. We have always secured our passports over the years in San Francisco. The location there is fairly convenient and it forces us to get off the island and have lunch in the City! 🙂

  3. If you think getting a passport is bad, try getting a visa to the Republic of China in SF on your own.

  5. I think you can take in photos from anyplace that does regulation passport photos and have them submitted with your passport request.

  6. Will this be walk-up service or by appointment? One of the major frustrations with USPS Passport Services is that some folks are clueless and completely unprepared when stepping up to the window. If they would just follow the directions prior to their visit, it will make it a fairly efficient service/operation for all.

  7. 6. that is a good point. The photos can be from any source, just need to be the correct size. We did ours at Alameda Main and it wasn’t too bad, but a couple weeks ago I also saw about ten people standing at the door, organizing for a complaint. I think they all had appointments and were locked out or something. One very together person was doing the organizing for the group.
