Sharing the journey

Just realized that I hadn’t yet posted any of the proposed plans for Central Avenue.  Here they are starting from West to East:

Naturally people who want to continue to view Central as only a street where cars should speed through unfettered will find the shared plan totally unworkable and designed to wreak havoc on their car trips, the great thing about this plan is that it will finally create safer way for Alamedans not in cars to go from West End to East End without needing to be constantly concerned about possible car conflicts.   If we truly want to provide alternatives to driving to folks in Alameda we need to make it easier for people to opt out of their cars as opposed to suggesting that bikes and pedestrians should take the longest meandering journeys in order to permit cars to have the easiest and most simply routes through the City.  This new Central will allow all modes of transportation the space it need to allow the user to use Central safely and most efficiently.

  1. wow. I’m probably not the most forward thinking person when it comes to implementation of bike infrastructure, but this really excites me. More than the track on Shoreline. I think this may be a real game changer and will get enough use to really change (some people’s) attitudes about bikes.

  2. as of today I won’t ride my bike through town because I don’t feel safe on the main streets running West to East. As a senior this would make me feel very comfortable riding this Street. Also the intersection at 3rd. & Central in this proposed plan would be a major improvement to Encinal High school, and make it much safer for both cars and pedestrians.

  4. I’d looked at a lot of the preliminary options, but these look incredible.

    My only problem is I’m probably (ok definitely) going to get fatter since I’ll be making more frequent bike trips down to Scolari’s West.

  5. It’s definitely an improvement. I’m a little concerned about the tight turn onto 8th Street that is a huge comedy of over-run curbs and near-misses in the on-coming left-turn lane for bus drivers. Does this help things, leave it unsolved or make it work?

    It would be nice, too, if the parked cars acted as a buffer for bicyclists, instead of just a strip of white paint and a two-foot-wide zone that requires a bicyclist’s eternal vigilance for suddenly opening car doors.

  7. 5. I’m not well studied with regard to the science of these infrastructures, but seems to me, to work well, the parked cars as barrier requires serious separation. With intersections every block, the constant reappearance of bikes from behind parked cars at said intersections might be a liability for everybody.

    That was the main objection by cyclists to track that was proposed for Clement street, even though there are no true intersections with through streets crossing of Clement from Oak to Grand. Some folks thought because it is a truck route and visibility from trucks can have blind spots, that it would be a set up for a cyclists being below the line of sight ( blind spot) of some truck driver who would nail them.

At least until we hit terminal mass (all puns intended), pulling into Alameda Pointe’s first entrance a few hundred yards past the high school is going to be the best bike route anyway, sliding through its relatively empty streets to Pan Am Way and slipping through the fence’s secret passway halfway between the O Club and the Ferry Building along Main St.
