Paging Dr. McPhetridge

Filed under: Alameda, School — Lauren Do @ 6:08 am

Per the agenda for next week’s School Board meeting, the Interim Superintendent selected is former Assistant Superintendent Sean McPhetridge.  Here’s the blurb from the staff report:

If approved, this item would employ Sean McPhetridge, Ed.D., as the District’s Interim Superintendent for the period August 13, 2014 through June 30, 2015.

Dr. McPhetridge most recently served as the interim director of student programs and services at the Alameda County Office of Education. He served as AUSD’s assistant superintendent from 2010 to 2013. During his 9-years with the AUSD, he also worked as the principal of the Alameda Science and Technology Institute (2005-2008); director of secondary and career technical education (also 2005-2008); and instructional vice principal at Alameda High School (2000-2003). He holds a Doctorate in Education from Harvard University.

Recall that last year around this time Sean McPhetridge jumped ship from Alameda Unified School District without the typical reasons as to why one normally leaves a job.  For those that watched School Board meetings, you’ll recall that he often butted heads with School Board member Trish Spencer over practically everything.  So it will be interesting to see how the vote goes down for this particular appointment.

He has strong ties to Alameda Unified so there shouldn’t be much lag time in getting him up to speed on the current issues facing the School District.

Interestingly enough, way back when the District was filling the superintendent position a few years ago Sean McPhetridge was being kicked around as a possible candidate for the full time job.

  3. some folks were trying to sell the idea that the exodus of a number of staff last year was ALL due to Spencer. In Sean’s case if that were true what’s his motive for returning? His history with the district covers a number of years, including leaving for a long stretch while he pursued advanced degree, but returning. I also learned recently that one of his first positions in education was working with men in prison ( San Quentin ?) which to me is a sign of somebody with a real commitment to education.

  4. Being the actual Superintendent — even an interim one — there’s a lot more muscle to flex than being an assistant Superintendent.

  5. I would say that his leaving last year had more to do with Vital than it did Spencer. I, for one, am glad he is coming back. We need someone who knows the district.

  6. I should know who the guy is but I have no idea. I know I should be informed of the schools, but I don’t have kids. My interest in in the new Safeway or a food place, although it should be the kids. I will try to focus more on schools. All I have heard is pretty much bad things about Trish, but I have never spoken to her and know anything about her really.

  9. Kate I will try to make it. I will look for something being posted as to the date. We will be having 2 sort of kids from El Salvador coming for a couple of month at the end of September. Their school ends in October there so I don’t know if they will have to be enrolled for a couple of months here. Their dad will be staying and they will go back and live with their mom. The kids and the dad will become US Residence after a couple of months. The kids will probably come back 2 or 3 months every year…but they grew up with their mom so they will have to live there until they finish school. The kids really don’t know English so I was thinking just home schooling them while they are here. With all that said I will try to focus more attention on schools.
