Back to the Fixing a hole series, this time alphabetically, Earhart Elementary on Bay Farm Island is next up, here are the details:
- Year Built: 1979
- Total Site Area: 8.0 acres
- Building Area: 36,270 sf
- 10 Portables: 10,015 sf
- Classrooms: 32
- Identified repair cost: $4,543,607
And site plan:
As usual a bunch of the photos are of portables and wood rot. I’m sensing a theme here with regards to the hardiness of portables.
There are, as with other schools, big ticket items like painting and replacement of exterior doors which have outlived their useful life. Earhart is lucky because it still has useful life on its roofing, but once that goes it’s going to cost big bucks to fix as well. And, as with other schools, nothing is outrageously expensive, it’s literally just the little things that nickel and dime its way into a $4.5 million repair bill for this school.
Here’s one big problem though, water collecting and so there is water damage on the top of the administration building, which, if left unchecked will become increasingly more expensive to fix. Right now, it’s has a price tag of about $174K and maybe more if the problem has led to dry rot.
Also, tripping hazards on the play yard. This really should be fixed.
Some old school water fountains, not ADA accessible:
Hmmm … they seem to be replacing the roof at Earhart Elementary … I have no insight as to why or what else they are doing, just noticed it while riding by on my bicycle.

There seems to be a pattern here. Neglected maintenance which leads ultimately declaring buildings unfit to stand.

ha I remember those tripping hazards on the playground there, they sucked 20 years ago and it’s hilarious they’re still there. the wallball court which predates my birth is still there too, which is also hilarious.
