A few notable things happening on the Island today and this weekend. Ruby Bridges will again be in Alameda at the West End school named in her honor tomorrow. My daughter, a new Kindergartener at Ruby Bridges Elementary informed me excitedly yesterday. For those that are wondering — if you were wondering at all — she loves her new school and her teacher. Her biggest compliment of her teacher is that she “doesn’t raise her voice.” If she were a little bit older, I’m sure this statement would have been coupled with a pointed look in my direction.
In other West End news, the space left vacant by Ben’s Barbecue has now been replaced by Rio California which is a Brazilian-esque joint. I actually have fond memories of Rio California when I used to organize meetings a long time ago at Preservation Park in Oakland. The chicken croquettes and empanadas were really tasty, though it sounds like they may not offer the empanadas anymore, I haven’t had a chance to make my way down there yet.
Don’t forget that this weekend is the Webster Street Jam which is — by far — my favorite street fair (sorry Park Street). Probably because of the proximity to my house which means that we all can walk to the fair as opposed to needing to get into our car to get to. Hopefully the weather will be nice and it will actually feel like summer this weekend so we can all enjoy the Jam.
The music line up is here, but I’m going for — what else — the food. I’ll be searching out the funnel cake that always seems to elude me.
Fortunately this year is not an election season, so hopefully we’ll be able to avoid the same level of drama that occurred at last year’s Jam. Although, I’ll be bringing along my video camera, just in case.
