A lawn sign without an election

Filed under: Alameda, Development — Tags: , — Lauren Do @ 6:00 am

There are a few notable agenda items on tonight’s Planning Board agenda.  But first things first: new Planning Board members.   So far, Mayor Marie Gilmore has had the opportunity to make three appointments to the Planning Board.   So there are three newish faces to the Board.   Most recently both Eric Ibsen and Patrick Lynch stepped off the Planning Board and have been replaced by David Burton and Mike Henneberry.  And Charles Patrick Wallis joined the Planning Board earlier this year, although he has since resigned from the Planning Board so there is now a new vacancy on the Planning Board.   So if you are interested, turn in your application now for consideration.

The first big thing is the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab update.   The big date supporters should remember is July 13.  That is the date the LBNL staff will be in town to see what Alameda has.  This is when City Staff would like members of the public that support the project to be out in full force.   Jennifer Ott mentioned that they will be working on different ways that people can get involved.  And of course, what Alameda campaign would be complete without the essential lawn sign?   That’s right, there will be lawn signs available!

I still think my initial idea of having Alameda Cal alumni congregate on the proposed site all wearing blue and yellow would be particularly neat.   But try organizing that in about a month, I think “herding cats” might be an apt descriptor.

The next item of interest is about VF Outdoor campus.   If you will remember, VF Outdoor is a huge company that used to be located in San Leandro and made the move to Alameda, but they are in the process of building a huge campus for all their affiliated companies such as: Jansport, Northface, Vans, Kipling, Eagle Creek, etc.   While the available maps do not show what the buildings will actually look like — that comes later — you do get an idea of the massing of the buildings, and this thing is going to be pretty large.

To lure VF Outdoor to Alameda there were some fairly substantial concession made and various incentives, but filling up those business parks is a definite plus to the City.

Woori Market on Park Street is attempting to get a Alcohol license to sell booze.   The former owner used to have a liquor license that expired, and now the new owner is trying to get a license.  There is only one letter from the public which is not in favor of more places to buy alcohol on that section of Park Street.

And finally, there are some changes made to the Park Street North of Lincoln plan, but it’s all pretty technical and dry.

  1. They may have to add a second campus, just for their shoes….

  3. 2. tell that to the rugby team and every other Cal team who wears blue and yellow.

  4. Sorry Jack, all the schwag looks pretty yellow. Of course, my alma mater’s colors are green and gold, but the gold looks yellow as well.

  5. The learning curve on the planning board takes some time, I would sure like to see this board be a little more stable and have some members that are willing to stay on for at least a full term.

  6. After Frank Matarrese and Tony Daysog termed out on the city council, I am counting on Lena Tam as our Cal Alumni (Marie Gilmore is from Stanford, and Boalt Law graduates don’t see themselves as Cal Bears) to carry our alma mater’s Blue & GOLD:

Our sturdy Golden Bear is watching from the sky
Looks down upon our colors fair
And guards us from his lair
    Our banner Gold and Blue
    The symbol on it too
    Means Fight! for California
    For California through and through.
    Stalwart girded for the fray
    Will strive for victory
Their all at Mater’s feet will lay
That brain and brawn will win the day.
    Our mighty sons and true
    Will strive for us anew
    And Fight! for California
    For California through and through.

  7. 2 & 6: You’re right, of course. The only college team I can think of that has colors yellow and blue is Michigan, and although some have been trying to change them to maize and blue, their alma mater is still “Yellow and Blue.” Kind of a pretty tune, too.

  8. 4. “… all the schwag looks pretty yellow.”

Then put out a call for for all the “Blue and Yellow Bear” alumni.

  9. We Cal grads are not yellow. How about our Cal baseball team! And how about Jason Kidd finally getting his NBA ring? LeBron’s not so hot, after all.

  10. Real Bears aren’t anonymizers.

  11. Sorry, Jack, but when I use my Christian name, my comments are always ignored! There is a reason Samuel Clemens published under “Mark Twain”. Real authors use pen names.

  12. Besides, what’s so all-fired identifiable about using just a 1st name, like “john”? There’s so many Johns here & @ Patch, I feel like I’m visiting a bordello! More creative monikers make for more interesting reading.

  13. Sam was a riverboat captain and heard the term ‘mark twain’ all the time during his steamboat days. It was part of his everyday life. So could it be said the same is true for you and your ‘pen’ name’?

  14. Just to be clear, it doesn’t make a lick of difference to me how anybody signs their comment…it’s the quality of the thought that matters. I tried using other monikers a couple times but ended up forgetting who I was, so gave it up.

  15. VF company made a 2 billion dollar offer for shoe maker Timberland today. Timberland’s stock saw a 43% one day jump by the stock market’s close. Two billion, thats some mighty big shoes.

  16. I sympathize, Jack. I had to get a vanity license plate, not b/c I’m vain, but once they stopped issuing 3-letters + 3-numbers plates, I couldn’t remember my car license any other way! “AV” is part of my email address & I have come to believe eternal vigilance is the price of living in Alameda. Oski wow wow!
