Thursday was the deadline for filing the first round of election contributions and expenditures. Here is a roundup of the numbers. Ash Jones and Kenneth Kahn did not file. All numbers are for this filing period only. The expenditure numbers were a little spotty, the next filing period should have the majority of the numbers. I expected the “Slate” to have a lot of expenditures since we’ve seen so much come out from that camp and they promised to file “contemporaneously.” Most of the expediture listings I “get,” but there is a payment to Eugenie Thomson from the “Slate” coffers that is simply filed under “campaign literature and mailings” for $418.88, is this for stamps because it couldn’t possibly cover the 4 separate mailings the “Slate” did according to Linda Larkin who claimed she received 4 “Dear Friends” letters. It would have been nice if all the Treasurers typed their information, but alas it was not to be.

Gee, I am surprised that your headline does not include SCOOP since you are the first source to report on campaign expenditures even beating that daily award winning newspaper. 🙂

Johnson reported her expenditures “late” in 2002 – after the election. Presumably to hid the tens of thousands of dollars she raised from developers who were part of APCP and presume she would navigate them to success at Alameda Point.
There are two theories on her late start to the campaign this year:
1) She’s purposely holding back until the last 2 or 3 weeks, upon which we’ll see a blitz.
More likely…
2) Her land developer friends, having backed out of Alameda Point aren’t going to bother funding a horse running into a dead end.
I’ve seen some of her material – it’s not even FPPC compliant with the appropriate disclaimers at the bottom.

It would be helpful to know who is backing each of the candidates. I notice that on the “slate’s” website, they do not list endorsements. I’ve been waiting for them, in the interest of “transparency” to tell us which political elements in the community support them.
Frank Matarrese and Lena Tam list their supporters on campaign pieces. (I am one of their supporters). I haven’t seen Beverly Johnson or Mike Rich’s literature yet.
For deeper analysis of the political debate, it helps to know who is lining up where currently, and we could also talk a little more about where these same people have lined up historically on a number of critical issues.

Carl – that’s what the disclosures are for.
Get the forms 460, 496 and 497 from the city-clerk office – those documents will tell you.

Re: comment #1 by Mike McMahon: Oh, it’s “award winning.” Got it. I always thought it was “award whining” daily newspaper. That bright yellow on black is so hard to read. My bad.

Interesting that David Howard claims to know the nuts and bolts of election campaigns, yet is completely clueless (and/or deliberately spreading innuendo) when it comes to identifying Johnson’s campaign manager. What gives? Another smear campaign by Measure A people?
Comment by Bill P — October 8, 2006 @ 9:51 pm
Smear campaign? Like Michael Vernetti’s letter to the Alameda Journal last Friday blasting Action Alameda which is pro-Measure A?
That would be a smear campaign on behalf of who? Mayor Johnson? Lena Tam? Frank Matarrese? Executed by a PR man (Vernetti) whose firm handles Bayport, Warmington Homes, Catellus, Marina Village, AP&T and others?
