Tonight there will be a super special meeting of the Planning Board to go over so many super important documents, I’m actually a bit surprised that (1) there was such short notice from when the meeting was noticed and when the documents became available and (2) that this is happening during the August break for the City Council which was planned in August because a lot of folks are on vacation and therefore not paying attention to local political stuff.
Case in point, I got back from vacay — it was fine thank you for wondering — last Thursday and I haven’t really had much time to catch up, let alone really pore over a 100+ page document on the Alameda Point Waterfront Town Center precise plan AND the Alameda Point Infrastructure Plan which also comes in over 100+. You know I’m not generally one to be all up in arms about not having enough notice or enough time to read though these documents and I’m not saying that there is anything nefarious going on, but good god people, everyone else has things going on in their lives too. While I’m a pretty quick reader and all, I do not have the time to go over all these documents in however many days they have been available to the public to read. I have kids to prep for back to school, I have work to catch up on, I haven’t even had time to catch up on Top Chef Masters yet. No spoilers please! I really don’t understand why there is such a hurry to get this done at a Special Wednesday meeting for the Planning Board. (Planning Board usually meets on Mondays)
The Waterfront plan is a hearing for the Public but, show of hands here, who has actually had time to read it? Anyone? Put your hand down if you are on City Staff or you sit on the Planning Board and it’s your responsibility to be prepared for your meeting.
So, just a few red flaggy things. Weird Big Box designation in the parcel that I thought had been designated as some sort of campus user commercial:
Silly names for street configuration options for the Town Center:
I like the Wiggle, only because it makes that corner at the Seaplane Lagoon a focal point.
I have to say that I adore the images of the types of buildings they foresee, but honestly they might be a little too modern for Alameda. I imagine it was SOM, the consultants, that selected the images because they aren’t very “Alameda.”
There is a really interesting “Phase 0″ which is being proposed which is just getting a there, there before the real there gets built:
I’ll admit, I opened the infrastructure plan document and I just couldn’t do it.
