Building a Community

Filed under: Alameda, Alameda Theater, Development, Public Resources — Tags: — Lauren Do @ 7:22 am

There are a lot of pretty exciting things happening in Alameda in these next summer months .  And yes, it is officially summer for this gal because when I have to sleep with all my bedroom windows open at night, I think the season can be properly lablled: summer.

Of course the biggie is that next week is the official opening of the new Alameda Theatre.    I’ll probably go into more detail next week, but, Eve Pearlman has posted an entry on her blog saying that the impossible has actually happened.   The gala event is sold out.   Really?!   $100 per person and they managed to sell it out, those are some very very excited people.  I guess that more than just a handful of people were or now currently are supporters of the theater.

Although, I was told that they will be screening some classic films during the event which sort of made me want to go when I heard that Singing in the Rain was going to be one of the movies featured.   Gene Kelly larger than life, that’s a pretty big sell.

And another tidbit from Eve P. the new Borders is open at Alameda Towne Centre.   I suppose this is what they term a “soft opening” since there hasn’t been a lot of buzz around a May 15th opening date.  They will be having grand opening festivities starting May 30 through June 1, although I wonder who will bring in the bigger crowd, Strawberry Shortcake, or former San Francisco mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr?  There is a pretty interesting event prior to the Willie Brown book signing though, which features the authors of a book called Cooking with All Things Trader Joe’s, which should be a draw for all you TJ fans out there.  From the website, it appears the authors are a more ethnic version of Sandra Lee and concentrate on using just items from TJ.

Finally, last but not least, Saturday will be the last of three community build days at the former Woodstock Elementary School for Alternatives in Action.   Alternatives in Action is moving their programs from Alameda Point to this site and that includes the BASE charter school, HOME Sweet HOME preschool, and the HOME Project.  What is great is that the Woodstock site will be playing home to many other great programs like the Boys and Girls Club and some AUSD resources will still be sited there.   So if you feel like picking up a paintbrush or a trowel this Saturday for a great cause, head over the Woodstock and build a community.

  1. Regarding the theater and cineplex:

I’m in the process of writing a piece on the opening and background of the theater/cineplex/parking garage for the East Bay Express–if any of your readers would like to comment, I’m looking for Alameda locals with varying perspectives on the theater project. My email is rin AT rinkelly.com; I’ll be working on the article this weekend, May 16 to May 18, for publication in the upcoming issue.

    Thanks!

  3. Again…. I am so pleased that Alameda has spent 37 million dollars on a parking garage and a facility to bring us high-minded culture such as “What Happens In Vegas.”

    Oh, joy.

  4. Does anyone know what movies will be scheduled to be playing during that first week? Hope it is the new Indiana Jones movie! BYW- there should be no street parking on Oak, too narrow!
    Thanks Adrienne

  6. Jack B, feel free to stay away!!! If the opening gala is any indication, the theater should be a big success. Bring it on … finally, we can walk to the movies!

  8. I followed the link to the Alameda theater show line-up. I could not read the front page, but going to the ‘schedule’ page there is a nice line up of free shows to ‘tease’ the taxpayer – the future customers. I know I want to see some classics on that big screen.

I also noticed a coming film I had not heard of - “Young At Heart”. This is incredible timing because many of my friends are long time supporters of the real-life “Young At Hear who are having a benefit show tomorrow. I hope to get to the benefit show tomorrow in Santa Cruz. And WOW what a line up.

If you want to cool off coast side and hear some truly excellent musicians, - check it out – both the organization, (which is an outstanding, amazing service that has literally done miraculous work), and tomorrow’s show line up (under ‘Special Events”), see it all at: http://www.young-at-heart.org The organization was started in 1985, I wonder if it was the inspiration of the film…

    Have a good week end!

  11. The schedules page works on my Firefox at showtimes.
Young@Heart is a documentary about the group Young@Heart.
The classic movies are being shown free on Saturday and Thursday according to the schedule.

  13. Thanks for mentioning the AIA Woodstock Community Build. I went with six teens and we painted, hammered, and laughed. It was a wonderful experience. One youth said, “You know, if more kids could participate in projects like this, they would be less inclined to damage things.” Well said! Then she said - how about the AHS bathrooms; let’s fix those!
