West End openings

Filed under: Alameda, Business — Lauren Do @ 6:49 am

For those of you that don’t venture out that often to the West End there are a few significant (depending on your personal opinion) openings that have recently occured on the West End of the island.   First, Willie Stargell Avenue, formerly known as Tinker Avenue, has been opened from Main to Webster.   So all you folks who have had to make the long trek around to get to Alameda Point now have a more direct route if you are coming out of the Tube into Alameda.   Remember though, the speed limit is only 25 mph on Stargell and there are some optimal speed traps right now in case your lead foot and open road are too tempting.

Also on Webster, as reported by the Island, there is a new restaurant in town and it’s not on Park Street.   Hopefully this is a sign of new and good things to come on Webster Street with the opening of Acquacotta.   Webster Street shoppers may be familiar with the sign (which has seemingly been up forever) and the location which used to be Coffee for Thought.  From the limited Yelp reviews so far, it looks like Acquacotta is getting a big thumbs up from the majority of reviewers.   Personally I’d like to see the Cocktail Hour guy do a review of it as well.

Another opening on Webster that isn’t so new is the Dock Cafe which opened up right next to Tiny’s Candy Store, I think by the owner of Tiny’s Candy Store.   Although I have to say every time I have tried to go to Tiny’s it ends up being closed.   I suppose I should check the store hours before I go, but sometimes you just want to pop in.

And taking the place of what used to be a Taco Bell and then Dimitra’s Sandwiches is now a Mountain Mike’s Pizza.   For folks that like their pizzas with lots of toppings that are named after various mountains, this is the place for you.

  1. Will be looking to do a review this weekend. The sign had been up so long that I forgot to check in. Thanks to the Island for giving the update

  2. Each year the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth & Their Families (ACCYF), in partnership with Alameda Recreation & Parks Department, and Pedestrian Friendly Alameda sponsors Alameda Walks! The walks take place the first three Saturdays of each month between May and September. A number of walks occur on West End. Here are some of photos taken from various walks that capture the connection between Webster and Main Street.

  3. Best to leave Mike alone on his mountain. The pizza may be ho-hum, but they have free parking and a very large sign telling you that they have free parking.

Oh, and they have free parking.

  4. I just walked in the door after having dinner at Aquacotta. Its the best, its just great. We walked in the door at about 6PM. and decided to sit at the bar as it was getting crowded. I had Carolyn our bar tender make me a Brandy Manhatten, very unusual and very good.

My dinner was very good, I decided to have the pasta with meat sauce as I am Northern Italian and that would give me a clue as to how this chef cooks. A simple thing like Swiss Chard tells me a lot, and it was perfect for me. The place was full when we left at 8pm.

I had my expresso and am very pleased with Aquacotto.

Lauren you have to try it, you will be very pleased. John P.

  7. Dave I just read your Comments on the food thread, and I would agree with you.
I wish I knew you were there, I would have covered that terrible Martini. maybe I could have gotten the bartender to make a good for you.

I’m very happy that you and others will at least be coming back to Webster for dinner.

  8. Only a teammate would fight a bar/tender for me John, Thank you.

    Seriously.

But don’t thank me for Webster per se, I lived for years on the West End and am pleased as punch to see another good rest there.

  9. A new Vietnamese Restaurant opened in Marina Village. Very good! They have over a dozen different types of spring rolls. The owners are very nice. What an improvement over the previous tenants (Dog Out).

The restaurant is the “Mint Leaf.” I hope that it makes it.
