Jeff,

I thought everybody knew that Don got the Narcissist's Self-congratulations Award for most stilted and self serving coverage for an Alameda cyber-newz site (of which there was only one at the time). He awarded himself the first minute his site was up because Don always has to be first so he couldn't wait until he did something worthy. I think he also gets a perpetual new award for each additional hit because it's sets some kind of ongoing world record for the most visits to ADN.

He really was Alameda's first blog site but can't take credit for that because he won't admit the site is just a blog.

Hi Lauren: Thank you for exposing Don Roberts' so-called "reporting" and welcome to my world. Doing real newspaper journalism is hard work. Gathering information from all sides and then writing it in a fair and balanced manner while under deadline pressure requires training and experience. I've been at it for 15+ years and it's still hard work. The old line is that journalism is a lot like sausage making -- people love the final product but wouldn't necessarily want to see how it's made is so true. While getting it right the first time is the goal of any real, credible journalist, mistakes do get made. I've made my share and they're painful. The difference between, say, a real news publication and the ADN is that honest journalists struggle to rapidly correct their mistakes when they come to light. Roberts doesn't.
The reality of the situation is that the ADN is a vehicle that allows folks like Pat Bail, David Howard, Art Lipow and others to savage those enemies that don't fall into lockstop with their skewed viewpoints.
Also, as a local reporter and editor who has been honored for work published in the Alameda Journal in 2006 by the SF Bay/Peninsula Press Club and by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, it frosts me that Roberts continues to claim that he's won awards for his site. I for one would really like to know which awards he's won. I'm wondering why he's so shy about this -- it's just not in keeping with his normal, self-assured snarky self.
Even as recently as this week the ADN allowed Pat Bail to take shots at me and the Journal as she blathered on about the AP&T telecom issue. Bail and Roberts somehow forgot that it was reporting that I and others at the Journal broke in the fall of 2006 -- before and after the election -- that fully detailed the scope of this financial debacle and its history. I guess she must have missed those editions. Oh, well, Bail's shown time and time again to never allow the truth to get in the way of a good story or her strident political rhetoric. I believe Roberts' blog does indeed deserve a place in the local discourse and certainly a place on the Web. He has an absolute 1st Amendment right to do what he's doing and I would struggle to the end to defend his rights. That said, Roberts should stop calling what he does as news or journalism -- it's just not. What he does offer readers is a biased, imbalanced Fox-style ration of daily dogma and opinions.
The sooner folks around our Island realize this, the better off we'll all be.

"Don world" is so different than the reality we live in. I don't go to his sight at all because A)I don't go to the movies on a daily basis and B)If I want to read junk gossip I buy "The Star"
