Barney?!

Filed under: Alameda, Crime — Lauren Do @ 3:26 pm

By request, hopefully you can help a neighbor and community member not have to go through the same turmoil as this Alameda family, excerpts from his email:

Last Friday morning, our Versailles Avenue home was broken into while my wife was out grocery shopping. The thief was in our kitchen having a bowl of Fruity Pebbles cereal when she came home. Fortunately, he saw my wife’s car pull up and ran out our back door. A short while later, the same individual robbed another home on Pearl and took a shower while there. While we lost some items, the value was more sentimental than monetary. The one thing that really hurt was that thief broke into one of my kid’s piggy banks and stole his saved coins. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

We’d very much like to inform others so they can avoid this fate and perhaps help the Alameda Police catch and stop this person. I hope you will consider publishing this information on the Blogging Bayport Alameda website.

The thief was spotted on a neighbor’s surveillance camera – a tall black/Hispanic man with an average build. Before he entered our home, he was wearing a plain black baseball cap & carrying a clipboard – he looked very much like a meter-reader or a petitioner. When he left, he had on my wife’s A’s baseball cap (backwards) and one of our backpacks in which he carried the items he stole from our family.

Here’s a description of the truck the thief had parked on Lincoln Avenue. It was an old, dirty, white, Volvo, 3-axle tractor (no trailer attached). It’s pretty beat-up looking, had a blue rag as a gas cap, bent smokestack and expired tags on the plates. It looks very similar to the truck pictured here, but again was dirty White in color:

Should any of your readers spot this truck, please ask them to record the license plate and immediately call the Alameda Police department. Please remind your readers that their safety comes first! Please ask that they NOT approach any individuals, let the APD do that.

PS – As an aside, the folks at Pagano’s hardware were especially empathetic & helpful over the weekend. When I explained the circumstances to the gentleman at the plumbing counter, he helped repair my kids’ piggy bank to like-new condition at no charge AND gave my son 20 cents out of his pocket. Pagano’s has my business for life!

I don’t know what is worse about this sceanrio, the audacity of the thief casually eating kid’s cereal in their kitchen, taking a shower in another home he burglarized, or stealing the money out of a piggy bank.  So keep your eyes peeled for the Fruity Pebbles thief, but as recommended by the victim, don’t be a hero and try to approach them, just call the police and try to get the tag number to help the police catch them.

Stay safe folks!

  2. Out of this whole shocking and sad story is the P.S. about Pagano’s..

That does not suprise me at all. John P.

  3. John,
I totally agree about Pagano’s. It doesn’t surprise me a bit. That is exactly the small-town ‘homey’ quality most Alamedans want to preserve.

We have heard enough on this blog of the need for a big OSH at Alameda Landing because “we need brighter lights and wider aisles.” All hogwash – we have fully stocked stores that can get anything, and it is operated by knowledgeable and helpful Alameda friends and family, not minimum-wage newbies willing to enter a 6-month career for Hardware Max USA Inc.

Pagano’s isn’t just a classic hardware store, as the story above shows, their workers still have real class.

    Often, bigger isn’t better.

  4. By the way – does anyone know if there is any gas station in this city that has as many pumps as Safeway says it needs at South Shore? (18)

With all the voiced concerns of pedestrian safety at South Shore’s new configuration,… the need for additional sidewalks on the east side of the parking lots, the talk of “too many” driveways across the walkways from Otis, the vocalizing the need to “de-emphasize the automobile” in Alameda, the PB’s past comments about getting the new plans piecemeal…. When will PB & CC start to begin to listen to themselves? They have said they know the effects (on our environment) of the project as a whole is greater than the sum of the effects of the parts.

When do we the citizens get an EIR on the project “as a whole”?

  5. Is it possible to get the thief’s photo posted from the security camera? And also, the note doesn’t say how we can be sure the truck is his — was he seen going to/from it?

  6. A still image could be extracted from the DVD, but that exceeds my abilty. What it shows is an average-sized black/Hispanic man in a hat and clothes that are shed/replaced during burglaries. I’m not sure how much it would help but it sure couldn’t hurt to publish and I will follow-up.

The truck was identified by a neighbor and is briefly visible on the video. Immediately after parking, the thief is seen walking away from the truck with a clipboard. Later he is seen returning to the truck with our stuff.

    Thanks

  7. Mr. Kirwin:

    There you go again.

Do you try to misinform the public on purpose, or do you just not know the facts?

The current plan for the gas station at “Alameda Towne Centre” allows for 12 not 18 pumps.

I’m surprised you didn’t know about the change.

    Best Regards,
    Robb Ratto

  8. Thanks Robb – when was the change made? I know that the plan called for 18. Do you think this will cause more or less traffic around the pedestrians trying to walk on the sidewalks?

    Comment by David Kirwin — June 7, 2007 @ 3:06 pm

  9. Actually, I think the plan came to the Planning Board with 16 pumping stations, down from the original 18. There were only four members present so they were not in a hurry to approve (Lynch , Mariani and Cook not present). One of them had issues with the entire idea, so they asked that the plan be completely redrawn with 12 pump stations and be brought before the full board. Should be next meeting.

The sidewalk was exhaustively discussed and there are various methods like speed bumps and textured cross walks which help delineate where the sidewalk crosses the driveways. Gas station or not, it is inconceivable that the various banks or whatever, should only have access to Otis.

  10. Mark,

Thanks for the explanation on the # of pumps to be reviewed for the proposed Safeway gas station at South Shore.

Your other comment made me think…
“Gas station or not, it is inconceivable that the various banks or whatever, should only have access to Otis.”

What is inconceivable to one person makes perfect sense to another. If you need the “bank or whatever” but not the shopping center then the pedestrians are safer if those parking lots are not a thoroughfare to the shopping center’s parking lot. If you need the shopping center, but not the “banks or whatever” drivers should use the intended entrances and exits. (Where traffic signals may appear in the future) If you need to use both the shopping center and the “banks or whatever” along Otis it will be a much safer walk for everyone if all the drivers are not trying to use any Otis-fronted business as a traffic avoidance short cut.

I also did a quick review of our city’s gas stations:

    Webster Street: Chevron – 8 pumps; Union 76 – 8 pumps; Shell – 6 pumps

Vallero on Central – 8 pumps

    Park St: Vallero – 8 pumps; Union 76 – 8 pumps; AM PM – 8 pumps; Cheveron – 16 pumps;

Did I forget any stations yet? My mind is reaching for a BP station – is that now the Vallero?

Bay Farm Island: Union 76 – 8 pumps (Bay Farm’s Island Drive between Otis and Robert Davey is the city’s 2nd busiest stretch of road clocking in with over 30,000 car trip / day. I believe the busiest is where the roadway serving the Webster & Posey Tubes meet, with over 3,400 cars per day, and this info does not include recent development.)

Nob Hill’s “Aisle 1” at the Landing looks like it will open with 12 pumps. ( It is also set up to be as far as possible from foot traffic; bus stops, and obviously that area has much less foot and bike traffic than the areas near South Shore Shopping Center.

It now looks to me like the normal number of pumps is 8 / gas station.
Another very viable question is – Do we need 12 gas stations on an Island 7 miles long?

  11. It’s funny how a quickly a buglary report can degrade into yet another arguement regarding development.

    One track mind, anyone?

  12. Mark – I provide you with background on the ad hoc facilitator and you say ‘chicken little’? It’s not like I said “the sky is falling” – I gave factual info – you made the call.

Then you choose to categorize me as Kenneth Star? Is that your version of neo-name calling? I think you have it ALL WRONG! At least I must assume Star was a better AG than Gonzales, -but I would never waste over $40MM to merely make a symbolic gesture to Clinton.

Somehow I feel more in the helpless position of Kucinich fighting the evil doing duo of Cheney, and Rumsfeld . But you see when things get bad enough even hard core republicans could no longer be idle mutes, and gone are Wolfawitz, Rumsfeld, Pace, and so may others. Unfortunately though they leave public service, they leave the public $9Trillion in debt – Dick ‘n Rummy’s $50 MM war has costs of around $2 Trillion.
Hey that’s about 4x more than what CA is not to get in tax-increment dollars because of they will be siphoned off to repay non-voter approved bonds for development projects citizens never voted for….But our state’s education ranking has gone from #1 to # 49.

I think the smarter move is to act BEFORE things get out of hand. That’s why so many are fighting H.O.M.E.S. now rather than later.

    Dear Robb,
Regarding your post #7 – that Safeway is asking for 12 gas pumps at a proposed new gas station on Otis.

If they only want 12 why are they still asking for 18?
    The agenda for tonight’s PB meeting includes the following;

“8-C Initial Study IS05-0001; Planned Development Amendment PDA05-0001; Major Design Review DR05-0010; Use Permits UP06-0003, UP06-0010, UP06-012 and UP06-0013; – Applicant: Safeway, Inc. 2234 Otis Drive (adjacent Alameda Towne Centre) (DG). The applicant requests approval of Planned Development Amendment, Major Design Review and Use Permits allowing the demolition of an existing bank building and redevelopment of the property with a gas station. The project includes three covered pump islands, each containing three pumps, for a total of eighteen pumping stations. Fuel will be stored in three 20,0000 gallon underground storage tanks. In addition to the approximately 7,500 square-foot canopy covering the gasoline pumping facilities, the project includes an approximately 625 square-foot building, housing the cashier’s desk, restrooms and retail sales of convenience items. The applicant is proposing twenty-four hour operations and the sale of beer and wine. An Initial Study / Mitigated Negative Declaration has been prepared for this project. Mitigation measures have been identified that will reduce potentially significant impacts to a less than significant level. The site is located within a, Central Business District with Planned Development overlay Zoning District (C-2-PD). (Continued to the meeting of June 25, 2007.) [view item]”

Looks like all my comments in post 4 are un-refuted.

We’ve already over 90 gas pumps at least 10 gas stations already on this island, and we still need to monitor the toxins leaching out of the sites of all the old and closed stations as well such as the abandoned station on the corner of Santa Clara and Oak.

Do we need to pollute more of our island as we try to de-emphasize the autos here?

  13. The planning board packet is wrong. Most likely cut-and-pasted from the last packet since it was meant to be continued. The new plans have 12-pumps as per PB direction.

I am unable to post documents here, so I created a page with a couple of interesting pieces on it. Including Safeway’s attempt to un-continue the item tonight.

    Comment by John Knox White — June 11, 2007 @ 12:25 pm

  14. David:

John Knox White beat me to the punch. The new plan calls for 12 pumps not 18. The old item was printed in the new agenda because when the agenda for tonight’s meeting was due, Safeway had not submitted their new plan to the Planning Department in writing. Which is also the reason staff continued it to the June 25 meeting. As is clearly noted at the end of the agenda item. So it appears your comments in posted #4 are refuted once again.

I understand Safeway has submitted their new plan and is trying to get it heard tonight. I’ll leave that problem up to staff and the board. However, the gas station, if approved, will only have 12 pumps.

Just trying to keep the facts straight.

    Best Regards,
    Robb

  15. Thanks Robb, and JKW;

I guess I do stand corrected, or will stand corrected when the new plan becomes part of the record.

  16. fer cripes sake DK, the Chicken Little comment was a different thread. Ken Star was never the AG, thank god, but the guy the Republicans put on Clinton to manufacture incriminating evidence for impeachment.
